Police ethics committees in England and Wales: Exploratory online and web surveys

Abstract Drawing from practice and learning of Clinical Ethics Committees, Police Committees began to emerge in the years following statutory creation College Policing 2012, but there is little research on their form effectiveness. This paper reports results exploratory online web surveys undertaken 2021. The revealed committees with word ‘ethics’ title fell within two different types. First, discursive advisory committees, largely inclusive those operated by large forces London Greater Manchester functioning more like expert panels. Second, some formal governance structures, receiving scrutinizing aspects police performance including complaints. Variation operation between was evident respect composition, presence reporting mechanisms. Further effectiveness required.
